The C. diff Solution: $15 in prevention is worth $30,049 of cure.

A systematic, interdisciplinary review confirms that Clostridium difficile infections are devastatingly expensive, as well as devastating to human health. According to data collected by researchers at the University of Toronto, costs directly related to C. diff infection ranged from $8,911 to $30,049 per patient. Lengthier hospital stays accounted for 87 percent of those costs, followed by lab studies and drug therapies.

Researchers reviewed 45 studies of C. diff between 1988 and June 2014, most between 2011-2012. Their findings, "The Economic Impact of Clostridium difficile Infection: A Systematic Review,"* were published online in the April edition of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. The majority of the studies (84%) were conducted in the United States.

"With [C. difficile infection] increasing in frequency and severity, it is important to estimate the economic burden," wrote Natasha Nanwa of the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto. "Decision-makers can use cost-of-illness studies to aid in strategic planning, and researchers can incorporate [cost-of-illness] estimates in economic evaluations that, in turn, inform health policy."

C. diff impacted patients throughout health care systems, including especially vulnerable populations: intensive care patients, cancer patients and transplant patients.

Researchers urged decision makers to investigate cleaning devices and techniques in establishing a strategy to stop C. diff. We agree. Effective disinfection reduces the incidence of C. diff infections and reduces the cost of treating these infections.

The Halo Disinfection System kills C. diff and other pathogens, including MRSA, at an average cost of less than $15 per room. The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the Halo System's six-log kill claim of 99.9999 percent, the gold standard of disinfection.

Halo also is highly economical: $15 versus $8,911-$30,049. And its hands-free fogging technology takes human error out of the equation, effectively disinfecting every surface in a room. The Halo Disinfection System is the clear choice in the fight against C. diff.
