Professional Sports

You leverage technology to put your team together. What are you using to protect it?

Daniel Fells, Tight End for the New York Giants, spent nearly a month in the hospital and endured seven surgeries in order to avoid amputation of his foot due to MRSA infection contracted after an ankle injury.

Carl Nicks, Johnathan Banks, and Lawrence Tynes were diagnosed with MRSA which was contracted within the Tampa Bay Buccaneers facilities in 2013. Banks is still in the NFL, but Nicks and Tynes both saw their careers ended due to the MRSA infections. Knowing that technology can be implemented to greatly reduce the risk of a MRSA outbreak, Tynes is suing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $20 million. The litigation has continued to progress through the court system.

Phillies Infielder Freddy Galvis and Dodgers third basemen Justin Turner both had bouts with MRSA in 2015. For Turner, the road to recovery was, “scary” as the infected area in his leg was carved out, leaving an open wound that doctors did not want to stitch shut, fearing further infection.

In sports, there are two ways to win; collect talent and keep it on the field. Your star player is no good when they are injured, or worse, in a quarantined hospital room contemplating amputation. Injuries are mostly unavoidable in sports, but MRSA and other infectious pathogens can be prevented.

Most professional teams employ janitorial and custodial teams to “clean” their facilities, but that is a relative term that demands education. You can touch a thousand door knobs and count money for hours without putting any debris on your hands, but would you say your hand is “clean”? Aesthetically, sure, but the bacteria and pathogens that cause sickness and death only present themselves once they start causing debilitating symptoms.

How much are you paying to reduce pathogens in your facility? What would eliminating them do for you?

Square One Solutions is here to educate, facilitate, and implement the technology to keep your multi-million dollar investments on the field producing for your club.
